How to Skip Violent Scenes and Adult Content in Movies

Most people like to watch movies without skipping any parts. Though what if for some reason you would like to skip certain scenes? Scenes that contain adult content, violence, action scenes, landscape scenes, scary scenes, erotic scenes, you name it.

Usually, your options are limited. You can either fast-forward a few seconds with the arrow keys or use the progress bar at the bottom of the video to skip several minutes. But what if there was a better way?

Turns out, there is, although it’s not perfect! I created a subtitle extension that allows you to skip scenes with very little or no dialogue. However, several steps are needed, so check out the requirements first!

Requirements:

  • A laptop/computer to watch the movie on.
  • A streaming platform such as Amazon Prime, Disney Plus, Tubi, Youtube, etc. (Netflix does not work, unfortunately).
  • A browser where Chrome Extensions can be installed (e.g. Chrome, Chromium, Opera)
  • A little bit of time to google for subtitles and download them.

How it works:

You install the subtitle extension which does three things: It displays subtitles. It indicates the number of seconds you have to wait until the next dialogue. It lets you skip to the next dialogue.

So, why is skipping to the next dialogue helpful when it comes to avoiding violent scenes? Well, most scenes with violence such as battles or gunfights have little to no dialogue, which means we can easily skip them. The same is true for sexual scenes or landscape scenes, as I call them.

Step by Step Guide:

Download the subtitles:

This can be accomplished with a simple Google search. E.g. “Titanic English Subtitles”. After downloading the subtitles make sure the subtitle file ends with either .txt, .srt, or .sub. If your subtitles are inside a compressed archive/zip folder, you will have to extract/unzip them first.

Install Movie Subtitles:

Go to the Google Chrome Web Store to install Movie Subtitles!

Once the extension is installed, go to the streaming platform of your choice (except Netflix!) and open the movie that you want to watch. If you have already opened the movie before, simply refresh the page! Wait until the movie has fully loaded and is ready to play. Now open Movie Subtitles by clicking on the extension icon as shown in the picture below:

If you can’t find the extension, click on the icon which looks like a puzzle piece. A popup window will open from which you can open Movie Subtitles.

Now you can load the subtitles:

Select the subtitle file you previously downloaded!

Congratulations! The subtitles are loaded and the only thing left before you can start skipping scenes/dialogs is to click on the extension icon one more time to open the subtitle menu and to enable the “Silence Indicator” which you will see if you scroll down a little. Now close the subtitle menu, start the video and simply press the arrow keys at the right/left of the subtitles to jump to the previous/next dialogue.

Alternatively, you can use shortcuts to skip scenes and dialogs. Press “a” to go to the previous dialogue and “s” to go to the next one.

And that’s it! If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Thx for reading, and enjoy your movies!
